Deerfield River TU members took to the water yesterday to get some training in identifying brown trout spawning redds. More than 20 Redds were found in just one location and many contained trout eggs. Redds were marked by GPS coordinates and crucial data was collected from each. Redd identification will continue this week, and all will then be monitored closely for the next few weeks.
Part of the purpose of this study is to get the Deerfield River certified as a wild brown trout watershed. The state Dept. of Fish & Game does not recognize it as such. If the river gets certified, TU could have a greater voice in the relicensing of the dams along the river.
