Didymo - Threat or just slippery gooey stuff?

We've heard a lot about didymo (Didymosphenia geminata) lately, but mostly horror stories New Zealand. Many don't know that this species is native to North America, and not far from New England. So why is it such a problem in New Zealand. Part of the answer lies in the cold, nutrient-poor waters of New Zealand's rivers. The survival strategy of this organism are fascniating.

So here is some of the latest research on the ecology of this species. The initial materials here are from the International Symposium on Didymosphenia geminata held in March in Providence, R.I. Anybody have anything else interesting?
